What to Expect on the Day of the ADF Aptitude Test

Anxiety often comes from the unknown. While you can't predict the exact questions on the aptitude test, you can predict exactly how the day will unfold. Knowing the logistics—where to go, what to bring, and what the room looks like—can help lower your heart rate so you can focus on solving problems. Here is a step-by-step guide to the day of your aptitude test.

1. Arrival and Check-In

Whether your test is part of a "YOU Session" or a standalone aptitude testing day, punctuality is your first test.

  • Timing: Arrive at least 15–20 minutes early. If you are late, you may be turned away. The military runs on a strict schedule.
  • What to Bring: You must have valid photo ID (Driver's License, Passport, or Student ID). You should also bring a water bottle. Do not bring your own calculator or scratch paper; these are usually provided or restricted.
  • Dress Code: Smart casual is the standard. You don't need a suit, but avoid thongs (flip-flops), ripped jeans, or offensive slogans. Treat it like a job interview.

2. The Testing Environment

Once you are checked in, you will be moved to a computer lab or a testing room.

  • Exam Conditions: The room will be silent. You will be seated at a computer terminal. There will be invigilators (supervisors) walking around.
  • No Distractions: Mobile phones must be turned off and usually stored in a locker or designated area.
  • Equipment: You will likely be given a piece of scratch paper and a pen/pencil for working out math problems. You must return this paper at the end of the test for security reasons.

3. The Test Structure

The test itself is entirely computer-based. Before the timer starts, you will usually have a few example questions to ensure you understand the interface.

  • Timed Sections: The test is broken into distinct sections (e.g., General Ability, Mathematical Ability). Each section has a specific timer. Once the time is up, the system moves you on. You cannot go back to previous sections.
  • Speed vs. Accuracy: The test is designed to be difficult to finish. Do not panic if you don't answer every single question. It is often better to answer 20 questions correctly than to rush through 30 and get half of them wrong.

4. Immediately After the Test

One of the unique aspects of the ADF Aptitude Test is the speed of the results.

  • Instant Feedback: Unlike school exams where you wait weeks, your results are generated almost immediately.
  • The Job Report: You will typically sit down with a Careers Coach or Case Manager shortly after the test. They will pull up your "Job Report" on the screen.
  • Unlocking Roles: This report shows you which ADF jobs you have "unlocked" based on your score. If you scored highly, you will see complex roles like Pilot, Intelligence, and Engineering. If you scored lower, these roles will be greyed out.

5. How to Prepare Your Brain

The night before the test is not the time to cram complex math. It is the time to rest.

  • Sleep: Cognitive function drops significantly with lack of sleep. Aim for 8 hours.
  • Hydration: Dehydration causes brain fog. Drink water in the morning, but not so much that you need the bathroom halfway through a 30-minute test block!
  • Warm Up: On the morning of the test, do a few simple puzzles on your phone to wake up your brain before you enter the building.

Ensure You Unlock Every Job

The worst feeling on test day is seeing your dream job "greyed out" because you missed the score by one or two points. Don't leave it to chance.
