ADF Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA): Standards for Army, Navy, and Air Force
Passing the aptitude test gets your foot in the door, but the Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) ensures you can walk through it. The PFA is the minimum physical standard required to enlist in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). If you fail this, your application stops, regardless of how smart you are. The standards differ depending on whether you are joining the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
The Three Components of the PFA
Regardless of your service branch, the PFA generally consists of three exercises completed in order:
- Push-ups: To test upper body strength. These must be completed with strict form (chest to a fist-height from the floor).
- Sit-ups: To test core strength. Usually performed with feet held and elbows touching knees.
- Beep Test (Shuttle Run): To test cardiovascular endurance. You run back and forth between two lines 20m apart, keeping pace with a beep that gets faster.
PFA Standards by Service Branch
Below are the PFA standards for General Entry candidates. Please note that Special Forces (Commando/SASR) and some specific roles like Navy Divers have significantly higher requirements.
1. Australian Army PFA Standards
| Gender | Push-ups | Sit-ups (feet held) | Beep Test Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 15 | 45 | 7.5 |
| Female | 8 | 45 | 7.5 |
Note: The Army generally has the highest cardiovascular requirement (7.5) for entry among the standard roles.
2. Royal Australian Navy PFA Standards
| Gender | Push-ups | Sit-ups (feet held) | Beep Test Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 15 | 20 | 6.1 |
| Female | 6 | 20 | 6.1 |
3. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) PFA Standards
| Gender | Push-ups | Sit-ups (feet held) | Beep Test Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 10 | 20 | 6.5 |
| Female | 4 | 20 | 6.5 |
Crucial Difference: PFA vs. BFA
A common mistake candidates make is thinking the PFA is the final goal. It is not. It is simply the entry ticket.
- PFA (Pre-entry Fitness Assessment): The test you do before you join to prove you are fit enough to start training.
- BFA (Basic Fitness Assessment): The test you must pass during and after your recruit training. The standards for the BFA are higher than the PFA.
For example, while an Army male needs 15 push-ups for the PFA, the standard often jumps to 40+ for the BFA once you are in. Do not train to just "scrape by" the PFA scores. Aim to exceed them significantly so you are ready for the rigors of recruit training (Kapooka, Cerberus, or Wagga).
Train Your Body and Your Mind
Physical fitness is only half the battle. While you are resting between your sets of push-ups and shuttle runs, don't forget to keep your cognitive skills sharp. The ADF Aptitude Test App is the perfect training partner for your downtime, helping you build the mental agility required for the Job Opportunities Assessment (JOA).
Conclusion
Meeting the PFA standards is a non-negotiable part of your ADF application. Start training early, test yourself under strict conditions (no cheating on push-up depth!), and aim well above the minimums listed here. Good luck!
